Default Speeds 27 vs. 29 Fever.......

Hi!

After reading a few posts here on this great Fountain-forum, several people say that the 29 Fever is in fact faster than the 27 fever with the same engine... This is strange as the 27 Fever is 700 lbs. lighter than the 29. The boats are very similar, so WHY is the longest and heaviest the fastest??

The 27 should require less positive trim angle to get the same bow lift (air out) as the bow shape is identical. That way, the 27 shold be the fastest. But if so is not the mtter, what is the real story here?? Maybe I am stupid, but this just don't make sense for me at the moment.... all inputs are welcome!!!

The catalogue says 68 mph fr the 27 with a 496 HO and 77 mph with a 525 fr the 29, so it is not easy to know.

All of them rock anyways, :-))))

The step on the 29 is much deeper. They are 2 different boats. 29's are about 4 mph faster than a 27 with the same power. (a few were sold with 496's and ran about 72 or so)

We had a 1996 27 with HP500 carb motor. Boat ran 76 mph on gps at its best, but chine walked bad. We then had a 2000 29 with 500EFI and it ran 73-74 mph gps at its best - had it for 2 years and under alot of different running conditions. Reggie report showed the 27 with HP500 at 76.7 mph and 29 with 500EFI at 75.3 mph. Maybe Reggie (or who ever at Fountain that ran the boat), was having an off-day since he couldn't get the 500EFI 29 3-4 mph faster than our 1996 27. Our 2002 29 with at 575SCi only ran 81 mph on gps, which is ~ 4 mph faster than our 27 with 75 hp more, and a much more aggressive X dimension than our 27 had. In general, I would say that they both run about the same speed with the same horsepower ... there are always exceptions, though.

I owned a 2000 29 and my neighbor 2 houses down owned a 2000 27. Both boats had a HP500.

I was consistently faster in every type of water.

I talked to Jeff Harris at Fountain about this years ago during a factory visit and it was explained to me that the 29 is a balanced boat and there is a lot more R&D work done on the 29 in step size and especially step placment plus drive height.

Not only is the 29 faster but the stringers are much thicker and the boat is built more stout than the 27.

This is great info, I wonderif the step on the hull mid-ship is in the water at full throttle? In that case, it will make a difference with the height, but I (think) on mine it is in the air at full speed? The boat slows much down if I reduce the trim from 5 down to 4 on the indicator. It feels like the step is then "re-entering" the water. It is build in 2003 and has the small step. I believe 2004-onwards has a higher step.

Yes, the 29 is really a well build little powerboat. Not one crack after 6 hard offshore races! And everybody loves it. Even the more "sceptical" mothers and fathers of my friends from a "academic" society like this boat. A 35 Executioner in comparison, is by them referred to as the smugler boat.... ****ing idiots! Last weekend, I put a 47 Lightning on their private dock. Wonder what they thought then :-)

one of the biggest issues of the 27 is it has only a 57 gallon tank and the 29 has 132 gallon tank. if you empty the tanks and put 20 gallons in both they run almost exactly the same speeds. starting in 03 they would put 1.65 geared drives with the 496's with 28-30 pitch props which helped top end numbers. If you are going with anything bigger then a 496 I would recomend the 29. You will need the larger tank. The 29 with a 525 is the best package. The 29 also feels 5 feet bigger. More cabin, more cockpit room between front and back seats and larger hatch. I hope this helps. Joe

I run the 27w/502. I don't know why but the 29 is a little faster. The 29 w/525 is a great package. Fuel on the 27 is a big problem 60 gal. 50 gal and the light is on. 120 miles and your looking for fuel
