29 Fuel Gauge

I have the '99 27 but mines erratic also. It stays full for a long time then as soon as it comes off of full it starts bouncing on empty. I have filled up as soon as it starts bouncing on e and only put in one half the tank capacity. I am kind of learning the gauge now. I have run it on e for a while but always had fuel. This last trip I ran it untill the needle stayed on e and quit bouncing at all and when I filled up I had 15 gallons left. This is about as far as I will push it. While on plane I just hit the gas then pull it back to make a wave in the tank. If the nedle does not move I need gas. Just installed my GPS so now I will have a trip meter to gauge fuel consumption also.

All the Fountains (and probably others) have this problem. The tanks are long and low and the senders are in the rear. The boats sit at a fairly high angle and this keeps the fuel "full" at the sender for a long time even though it's getting low. You need to kind of keep track of your fuel. When the gauge says 1/2 you probably have 1/4 or less. My 47 still shows full on the tanks when actually they are less than half!

The GPS is the only way to track the gasoline usage. I average 1.5 mpg. I have had my boat run out of gas. 
And for those wondering a 35 classic will not stay on plane with one engine! My gauges read a quarter of a tank and still bounced. I knew from my mileage calculations that I should have 15 gallons per tank. Wrong! Fountain used smaller tanks for part of the year in 1997. Guess who had the smaller tanks. :eke: I had always thought they were 79 gallons, they were 69 gallons. I also found out the pickups don't go to the bottom of the tanks there is 4-5 gallons of unusable gas. This means rjcardinal had less gas than he thought. When I filled the boat it only took 64 gallons and 63 gallons.

A little under half is empty on mine. All the way back from Stingaree's (across Galveston Bay) a few weeks after I got her, it was sitting at half and I was wondering if I had enough gas to get back. She ran out right in front of the marina - darn gauge still said about half a tank.
