Default 27 525sc

Thanks For all your input so far!

Have narrowed the search down to a 99' 27 w/ a 525SC and bravo 1 drive.
The boat, motor and drive are all factory stock.
My goal is to have a reliable 80mph boat.

Current owner is claiming 84 mph on gps.

Prior to closing deal, would like some help.

Is 84 mph realistic?

Thanks Again!

I think 84 mph (GPS, on a lake with no current) with a stock 525SC would be a new record! I had a 27 Fever stepped hull with a carbed HP500 that had a little bit of work done to it and it ran 76 mph (gps on a cool day with 2 people and light on fuel). It would run 73.6 mph in the middle of summer and a full load of fuel/people. A couple of my friends have 27' Fevers, also; one is non-stepped with a blown 509 (just over 600 hp with 8+psi boost) and his tops out at 81- 82 mph (gps the lake) on a good day, and my other friend has a stepped '99 27 with a blown HP500 (around 5 psi boost) and his tops out in the upper 70's. The 525SC does not have quite as much torque/hp as the HP500, if I remember correctly, so I doubt that a stock 525SC in a 27 (even with the stepped hull) would do much over mid 70's in the right conditions. From what I have seen, it takes around 600 hp to push a 27 into the low 80's.

Also, at those speeds, the 27 can be a handful to drive due to chine walk, unless you go to the longer K-planes, but then you need more hp to move the boat because of the extra drag. Alfster, here on OSO, has a 27 Fever that runs upper 80's (maybe low 90's by now )but he has a 540 with aluminum heads, tunnel ram, "higher than average" compression and runs rather high rpms, too. He added the longer K-planes so the boat would remain controllable, and his boat is a non-stepped hull. My other friend's non-stepped 27 is just starting to get goofy at 81 mph. The 99 stepped boat with the blown 500 is starting to get really spooky around 78 mph. Our stepped 27 would just start to "dance" at 74-75 mph.

For comparision to what Fever Mike said above, our 2000 29 with an HP500 efi runs right at 70 - 71 gps on the lake. I can see about 75 if I go to the river when the current is running hard

Like they already said, only way that boat is going 84 is on a trailer, unless the stock 525 is more like a 600 SC and also hang on it is a great mid 70's. You want to go in the 80+ better move to a 29 or larger

Sounds about right, figure 10-15hp per MPH increase, 490HP at the prop for a 525 vs 600 HP. Will really be interested in what your hand held GPS says after your test ride. What prop is he turning to get to that and at what RPM?
