Default Y'all invited, come on over

Just wanted to extend an invitation to your group for the Don Aronow Memorial Race, to be held on June 20th from Sunny Isles Beach (Haulover Inlet) to Bimini and back....100 miles total. Poker run boats acceptable, see the rules.

All the detail info is on the HORBA site www.historicraceboats.com

But the deal is this....we are trying to let a whole new generation experience what it was like to do an open ocean race like the old days.

Minimum length 20 feet and max length 55 feet. 5 Simple classes with one being 'Run what you brung" class.

The emphasis is on fun and safety..... and a good time by all. The race is one boat at a time, every 30 seconds, timed over the 100 miles...no group start.

Friday is the race and Friday night is a get together for old racers 60's and 70's guys for a.... seminar / meal / gathering / story telling / lying session / you name it.

Saturday is a Concours of old race boats and cars and Sunday is the regular OSS Offshore race. Great weekend.

Thanks, Charlie. I have been following your event with interest and am considering it. My boats are usually north by early June but may leave the new diesel Nor Tech behind to do the run.
I have long been fascinated by the pioneers of our sport. Keep up the good work. I admire you for what you are doing and all the best.

Thanks Bob

Forget the race and the concours....the get together ought to be worth the price of admission.

I asked Brownie the other day if he ever raced for Mr K. He said that Mr K once built him the most competitive boat for the 283 cu in class.....it was powered with the baddest 327 cu in motors you could imagine.

Hope to see a lot of the FM people there.

Thanks for the invite. I was speaking with Roger Munn yesterday trying to talk him into running his magnum in the race. I don't know whether he will or not but he had said he was speaking with Billy Martin about it and that they were very intent on attending. Should be a great group I would like to run if my boat is up to it but if not I will definately attend.
You all are legends to me and I grew up watching you all run the races in our area. I can't describe how those races formed an impression on me during the late seventies and early eighties. The whole group of you are responsible for my love of the sport. Thank you. I wish you the best in organizing what has been too long in coming

John

Latest on Don Aronow Memorial Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A very big THANK YOU. We were losing faith in the offshore crowd for a while there, but all is well now.

We have had a great response to this race with more and more entries every day and we are vey happy to say that we feel that we have achieved our goal of producing a quality event that honors one of the sport's founders, Don Aronow.

We have also attracted the top people from the many areas of offshore.

In addition to Miss Geico and Don's original race boat called the Cigarette, we now have entered Bill Pyburn from the poker run side, Bob Teague from the active racing side and boat builders like Randy Scism from MTI, who will be bringing his latest innovation. Lavey Craft and Pantera are in. Fountain also will be represented by two race boats.

There are a number of privately entered Cigarette's and we have about 1/2 dozen historic boats racing plus more on the land for display.

We are happy to see racers from other organizations beyond OSS coming to race. The Muscle crew is on board too.

And the best news of all........Michael Aronow is coming and will be signing the checkered flags of all the winners.

We are trying to make this as easy as possible for everyone to attend. If you want to pay by credit card, that is now all set, just contact us for instructions on how it will be handled.

The average weather during that time period calls for calm water, so watch the big cats set new records for this run. Everyone who races will actually be setting new records for their class, as we have professional record people on hand.

We have special patches that will only be given to the racers, in addition to the event patch that Brownie has made up. And a special personal Thank You certificate, from Michael Aronow to those racers that participate in this race to honor his dad.

Don't miss this. It is shaping up to be the biggest event of the year. We have over 60 of the old racers coming for the weekend and you can meet them at the big party at Gulfstream on Saturday night.

Live band at the Race Village right after the race and winner's boat parade on Friday, will be playing until 10PM.

Keep those entries coming we would like to see 50 boats !!!
