The RPBA , Jammin on the James , has been around since 1988, and has grown from 35 boats to 83 boats and have to cut it off due to dockage,14 on waiting list now. This year we sent out the registrations in Janurary and sold out in less than 1 month, we never have even come close to that before, sold out but only a week before the event in July. What has our done ours the best was the Food & Band, we hired one of the best bands in the Mid-Atlantic area (THE WORX). The run can also be done by 21 foot boats. We have a great dock spot, already drawn out and each person already knows where they are going when they pull in. T-shirts are a little plus, we changer the design last year for the first time in 10 years, different.
To keep it fresh and people coming back , I think you have to keep the run fresh and exciting & something NEWevery year.
Helicopter video & pics a must have.
Hope this helps.

No lines for registraton, food, and turning your hand in; that gives you more time to look at the boats and socialize Lots of event staff that knows what's going on. Running on schedule, that goes for the drivers meeting and leaving the docks. Ever notice when your rafted together at a stop that the guy furthest from the wall is the last to show up to leave (maybe cause he is the last to arrive ). I hate the stress of engines running, lines undone and waiting........
I know it is not always possible due to dock space, but I love it when you have a lunch stop plus an addiditional stop. Entry fees should equal the level of food and parties provided and if there is a video all boats should be treated equal. Since only a few people win the hands, I would rather see smaller prizes, throphies, and goodie bags, and spend that money on the parties and food or even better lower the entry costs.

The Resorts Casino has an awesome facility. State of the art AV and PA for the awards presentation. Incredible staff and great chefs make it a first class event.

An update...
We have been reviewing the suggestions and making adjustments where needed. Just to review some points that have been offered.
Safety is definitely a priority and has been from the initial planning of this event. No drinking before we are back on the docks is a must. Marine units are aware of our run and we have their cooperation. There will be full support with medical from coast guard and marine units and even salvage equipment standing by.
Dock space is plentiful and we will be limiting entries to ensure everyone has adequate space. The marina has very nice facilities for overnight guests. The parking lot is fenced, gated and guarded full time. Launch ramps are very nice and capable of launching all sizes of boats including a 50' Nortech cat that has launched at this marina. There are also fork lifts and a travel lift available.
Sponsorship, fees and Charity. This run is 100% not for profit. If a dollar is raised it is either spent in the cost of the run or given to the charity, Childrens Memorial Hospitals. Chicago Powerboat Club is organizing this event and is all volunteer and not for profit as well. I just wanted to be clear on this because many charitable poker runs have charitable events, we will as well, but the fees and sponsor moneys can go to the organizers. This will not happen at the Chicago Poker Run.
I will post more on the party and run later...

Re: What makes a great Poker Run?
I am looking for a little input on some of the meals as I finalize the plans.
Friday evening reception - We are planning a Friday evening welcome reception with Hors D'oeuvres and an open bar. How many of you attend the Friday night activities?
If you haven't signed up yet please do so soon. Only 3 weeks to go.
