Paradise Cove Marina owner Ron Doll, who has owned his business on Lake Travis since 1981, said he thinks the increase in accidents may be attributed to "poker runs," in which boats race full speed from restaurant to restaurant.

I go on those poker runs and I've never seen anything serious go wrong. Drownings are almost always related to someone jumping off a boat to dive or to swim to another boat. All while at anchor or tied up. Ron's implication that big performance boats running at top speed are somehow involved in drownings has no basis in fact in recent years.

Fact is, a lot of the experienced boaters lost their boats in the past 2-3 years. I've noticed a lot of new boats and inexperienced drivers coming out as the economy's recovered. Inexperienced operators, drug/alcohol use, and a few daredevil pilots are the main contributors to accidents and injury at this end of Lake Travis.

I am truely sorry for those involved but what do two boats running into each other at night have anything to do with poker runs?

Ryan's condition has worsened. He was rushed into surgery last night to remove a section of brain. They say if it swells up again, there's no hope.

There should be a Federal law that says no boat can be on plane after dusk. This could be limited to inland lakes as the ocean and big lakes have more room to maneuver. Don't let the states control this as they bow to constituents and have a conflict of interest. This is a rule I observe but it does not help if someone plows into me. I hope the survivors pull thru, the missing woman is sad, the whole situation is sad....because it could have been avoided.

Personally, I'm glad I don't live in a dictatorship, benevolent or otherwise. Neither Ryan nor Heather would have advocated this. They love/loved their freedom and accepted the inherent risks.

The reg's here state "...watercraft not operate faster than 20 miles per hour or the minimum planning speed at night on the Highland Lakes." It'd be impractical to expect planning hull boats to move slower because of the distances involved on this lake. Careful operation is the key.
