Konrad Marine's project 29' Fountain
I thought I'd share some pictures of my latest project working with Konrad Marine.
Last spring, Konrad Marine had purchased a sweet 1987 29' ICBM Fountain to be used as an R&D boat. It's a really clean fresh water boat from Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. This little Fountain seemed to fit our needs pretty well, not too big, easy to drag to the ramp several times a day and since it was a TRS boat, swapping over to a pair of Konrad 540's would be a breeze.
The boat ran well at 62 mph but just did'nt have the horse power (stock 330's) to provide any real solid data. We needed more power.
After a few lengthly discussions, we decided on a pair of naturally aspirated 650hp 540 low decks backed up by BAM Cyborg 72C transmissions and our Konrad 540 drives complete with HP lowers. The stock cable steering system was removed and a full hydraulic system from WPM was installed as well.
We completed the project in less than two weeks and had a chance to run her in the St Criox river last Saturday. The results were pretty decent, After trying a couple sets of props, on a glass flat river we ran a best top speed of 85.8 @5500 with a pair of PowerTech 28 four blades.
Sure was a fun project and I know there's a few more mph in there somewhere.

Since we were upgrading from Borg Warner 71C trannies, we had to move the mounts forward almost 1" for the longer 72C's

The new 540's were dressed with fully polished CMI headers, MSD ignitions, Hardin Marine thermostatically controlled oil coolers, Holley 130 gph fuel pumps and Nickerson modified Holley 850 carbs.

You need to do something that will stress the drives to the breaking point. Like a Black Thunder with 1000 hp a side and then go run some poker runs. I'll be glad to offer my boat as a test bed....
