Only by seeing these boats in person, can one get a sense of admiration for the racers of the time.

High tech instruments, the blue dial is a speedometer. The cabin was mandatory, to prove they were actually cruisers, capable of spending an overnight if needed.

Here is our 1988 31 foot Sutphen Spirit. Total race layup built for Bill Gazell who has owned and raced it since new & won many many national & world championships with it. The boat was also the offshore kilo record holder for many years.

This is the third " GREAT ADVENTURE " race boat that I have been fortunate enough to acquire, and even more fortunate to have throttled all three of these boats for Bill Gazell many times.

I feel this was a definite LUCKY STRIKE !

Betty Cook's 38' Cougar cat has been spotted in a boat yard in New England. Two guys from HORBA are negotiating with the yard right now. It has the name "FlapJack" on it because Howard Quam campaigned the boat in the mid-eighties. It is in pretty bad shape and will require a very expensive restoration if the deal can be made.

This boat is from back when the points went to the DRIVER rather than the boat. Some teams brought a deep-V AND a cat to most races and waited to see which had a better chance in the water conditions that day. Needless to say that caused some grumbling and later the points rules were changed.

No, but I can find out from HORBA board member Barry Cohen who owns the boat and his company did the restoration on it for the NY Boat show.

That is one of the things that I wanted for the members of HORBA, that the board members can be of real use to anyone that has an interest in this.

To begin with, if someone finds an old race boat and wants to buy it, the first thing they should do is contact HORBA board member Ed Cozzi. He will be able to give them a good survey, not only from a marine surveyor's point of view, but also as a former racer.

Once you have a survey and know exactly what you need to do to get it in shape, go to one of our other HORBA board members and let them give you a quote on restoring it for you.

Mark McManus has done many restorations over the years at Apache. Barry Cohen with BARCONE restorations in New England. Bobby Saccenti of Cigarette, Apache and Chief can certainly handle any of this work and do a great job. Pepe Nunez a boat builder for over 30 years can do a great job also.

And for parts for the restoration, look to Brownie @ Stainless Marine. These guys all have the knowledge and experience so that you don't waste money on your project. In the end you will own a piece of history that is worth something when they finish.

Trick is also doing research for us to find some of the old retro pieces that may be needed.

Charlie here´s some old pics from mainly Roslagsloppet.
Pics 14-17 might stir some interest. There´s Mäkinen with his Donzi.
Roslagsloppet

Here´s Classic Offshore class from Sweden also some old pics from Roslagsloppet, the oldest and biggest, regarding participants, offshore race in the world, since 1919.
Classic Offshore

Here´s some old raceprograms (Bilder=Pics)
(Segrare=Winners.)
Roslagsloppet programs

And here´s the Classic Offshore winner of 2005 from Åland Lennart Lönnberg the man behing Poker Run Åland.
Cigarette TG 38 Hawk

And the Story of the all Conquering Smugglers that beat everone who dared to challenge them... Read Aronow,Balestrieri,Hunt, you name them they whipped ´Em...
Smuggler
Sorry in Swedish only but look at the pics and numbers (some resemblence to the TopBanana story...)
*The founders of Smuggler were two SAS airline pilots who thought Hunts 24 Degree Vee is good but their 28 is better.

The Whereabouts of Dons old boats is a good question.
The BoatCompany Boghammar at least made Magnums under licence and bought molds from Aronow, he sold Magnum molds also to Italy as he did with Cigarette too and Nor-tech (then High- Tech) made a splash of a Cig 38, got sued by the Cigarette importer, had to turn over the molds to the norwegian Cigarette importer and pay 200000 Nkr.
But that´s how Nor-Tech started If I´m not mistaken...so Aronow really made a stir here too.
You be the judge, Copy or not the norwegian text also states it´s a Nor-Tech.
High-Tech 1.edition, one of 3 made

Magnum28´s

Here they state that Aronow had two Magnum Maltese (27)´s in Europe and those where bought by Tage Boghammar and John Kennerley in 1967.
1967 in The Cowes race Don had a new 27 which was a narrow prototype boat Don called Banana which 8 were made but I think you know that Charlie....the molds of them got scrapped and all the boats also except one which sunk ( the one raced in two races by the 3M President, Ed Kendell)

1968 He continued racing with a Magnum but only in USA as he got in his years debut in an accident and let Balestrieri buy the 1967 boat.

But according to the story Don had 3 "the Cigarettes" two in US and one in Europe.
I don´t have a clue where any 32 Carys would be but my bet for the one racer in Europe it could be in Britain or France..if Britain probably still around in some shed.

Lets keep hunting.

Ps you can still order a Splash of a Magnum in Sweden...
here´s a pick of one racing last summer..
