Back then you had to be INVITED to race in the Worlds. Howard and Keith Hazell were US-2 in 1979 in #45, Flap Jack, behind Betty Cook and John Connor.

Right around Christmas of 1979 a chap named Jack Cunningham purchased the 1979 38' Bertram from Howard and it was campaigned in England after that. Jack bought the truck, trailer, spare engines...EVERYTHING!

Howard was thinking of not racing in 1980 until he decided to purchase the older 38' Bertram called "Satisfaction" from Paul Clauser. (formerly the "Copper Kettle" of Sandy Satullo). It was slower and heavier than the newer 38's Howard was used to, but it was as strong as any boat I had ever been in.

Does anybody know what ever happened to Paul Clauser?

Mr Sunny Isles Marine himself.....No, don't know where he is...BUT I got a call yesterday from a guy in Montreal who is restoring the old Copper Kettle. He is going to send photos as the resto goes on.

Speaking of those races in Venice...... a cat by Cigarette...yup, they made cats ( by Billy Seebold)...it was throttled by Richie Powers, did very well until one sponson went one way and the other went a different direction.

Had dinner with Clauser, Connor, Digger not long ago. Clauser has lost about 100 pounds and looks almost human....

This is the Donzi Bill is talking about, I saw it on Lake St Clair back in the late 70,s, it was called Moon Man. It was ruff back then.

The boat was blue when Arnold built it.

When LS Jr gets home he has some pics I'll have him put up.

It had 482's with #3's. No cabin, it ran about 72 mph. I have been it many times.

Arnold painted it yellow to match his Rolling Thunder Baha race boat.

This is the first time I had read this thread. It's fantastic. So much history, and so many dedicated people to keep the old war horses going. It's great.
