I always wear a hat and thin white long sleeved shirt. If you get it wet it really keeps you cool and it keeps the sun off. If we park for a long time I put up the umbrella like the others have mentioned.

The Sunbrella's work great and dont take away the style of the perfomance boat! We all remember the Nortech hurricane cat that had the Bimini top on it that looked like shi*......we use a white sunbrella and what else is sweet is you can move it from boat to beach...or wherever

You can see the mechanicals in this shot. More than a few boat manufacturers offer biminis that stow beneath the rear decks hatch. Unfortunately, mine sits on top of the rear deck, catches a bit of wind, and even abraids the paint. Sux. But it's all worth while when it's 110 degrees outside...

It's really important if you are the "wrong" skin type to be wearing a high number of SPF sunblock and REAPPLY every two/three hours.
As I am still waiting to get the staples/stitches out of my 41st and 42nd MAJOR skin cancer surgeries, I have pretty fair knowledge of the skin cancer issues.
Most stock biminis will run 35, maybe 40 mph before you start putting too much pressure on them.

We had a bimini top custom done along with clear front and side panels and full back side with large clear window. Cost about 1500 total using aluminum poles and stainess joints. I can run upto 50mph with it. This was on a 31ss sonic. I had the anchor umbrella for several years and don't miss it. Worked well until the breeze would blow... couldn't be happier with the bimini..... works great and takes 30 seconds to put up and just a few minutes to put the storage boot cover over it.... again, love it!!!
