On three different occasions in the last few years, I've ridden a jet-ski to Catalina and back, from Newport Beach. What a frikken blast!!! Particularly on a weekend with lots of boats out, you can zoom around, visit other boats, and be free as a bird...
Take your VHF, your PFD, and your sunscreen, and JUST DO IT!

I lived in Newport for a couple of years and made the trip numerous times in my boat... see no reason why jet skis wouldn't be fun-- don't think I would do it without company, but the pacific was named that for a reason. Next to Maui, the clearest water I've ever seen.

Not to mention the stuff in the water in the deep channel between the mainland and the island. I have seen some pretty big sharks (they actually had some Great White research going on there recently) out there. I don't think I would want to be floating around on a jet ski out there if something broke.
My father in law actually swam to the island from San Pedro, but he is CRAZY!!!

Bottom line, don't spend your precious vacation time bouncing your azz and breaking your back on a $hitbox jet ski... But rather get to the island the fastest way possible and enjoy it.
