Randy at Cobra claims a loss of speed.
Out of curiosity. Can someone please measure there New style
Mercury Skeg?.
Take the measurement from the propshaft
center line to the bottom of the skeg.
I am betting it is deeper then the old style.
Thanks

Re: Swept back Skegs
We put the swept skegs on our boat and it handled much better, not sure on speed though. The old skegs aerated the water and the new skegs give clean water to the prop which past 100 or so results in more speed and of course better handling. I believe Merc did testing on some cat and consistenly saw 2-3mph more with the swept back skeg. The herrings are just a little bit faster as well because they are thinned down just a bit if I am not mistaken. The swept back skeg is the way to go, no way around it.

Could you measure the depth of the new skeg?
Thanks

Gerry-
The majority of the pros suggest going to the swept back skeg (only one had a different opinion). Even if there is no speed gain, the handling improvement is worth the change. I'd do it for that reason alone, but wouldn't mind a couple of mph as a bonus!
John Tomlinson said maybe 2-3 mph from the skeg change: depending on the boat.

Yes...just a couple of mph..you have to do a whole bunch of heavy wallet tuning to make it show up....and not many people know about this...lots of know it alls....I do not even know if it will show up on your boat in the ocean.....props would be your best bet....like 3 sets..nobody can do you in the ocean anyway..
