Re: Whats better in the rough Cat or Vee?
If you had to go as slow as the deep v, it would be rough.
In the v you would get wet and beat up, in a 46 skater you wouldnt even spill your drink.
I have raced both, a 32 hustler, 40 hustler, then stepped up to a 40 skater.
As a friend of mine said, you dont see any of the "old" guys in the v's anymore, wonder why ?

Re: Whats better in the rough Cat or Vee?
My TopGun also sat last Summer with only 10 hrs total running time following my 2005- 37 1/2' Cat purchace .
Both boats handle well in consistent rough water, per our Chesapeake Bays conditions.
My Cat is a much better ride and will not beat you up near as much as the TopGun at speed.
I cant speak for big ocean running, but in up to 4 to 5' s on real snotty bay days its my Cat hands down ,there is no comparison.

Was that a race...or a Poker Run?
Big Difference.
In Offshore racing that train left the station long ago......
Power for power the cats have won in rough or calm water...since the mid 80's.
Even the Miami- New York race was won by a cat.
The fact that a 42+ foot vee bottom with 2500+ hp can beat a 36 foot cat (stretched to 38) with 1100 hp means very little.
525 hp's versus 525 hp's
or
twin 1400's
in equal sized boats..... say 36 foot cat against 35 Vee
or 46 foot cat against 46 foot vee
Give me the cat...up to small craft warnings
After that
let's make it 30 foot cat against 30 foot vee
and I'll take the Shadow Cat.

Guys the Apache video is great......it really is.... but it was FOREVER ago.
T2x in the chopper clearly states they are running 80-90mph in 4 to possibly 8 foot seas. When that video was shot it was unbelievable, but that is NOTHING for todays technology in boats.
Most major branded cats over 40 ft long will run over 100mph easily in those conditions. Running a minimum of 10-15mph faster than the next guy over an entire race could get you lapped.
I've been in all of them (41 Apaches/Sabers 40/46 Skaters, 50ft Hustlers, 47 Fountains, 46 Rough Riders, 42 Tigers, etc) in about everything from 4-6 footers up to small craft advisories, and the bottom line is the cats are just faster. I didn't read about it in a magazine, or have a guy at the bar tell me about it either.
Before anyone jumps my ass, I love everything old school and new school from vee's to cats. They are all built for one thing, and that's hauling ass offshore. How you want to do it is up to you.

Re: Whats better in the rough Cat or Vee?
That was a few years before the big composite cats came on the scene.
We have newer footage of a 46 triple engine Apache getting hauled down and passed by a twin engine 40 Skater in even BIGGER seas....... (Tweets Revenge, Vs Spirit of Norway, Ocean City, Maryland) that clearly shows the smaller cat's superiority in rough water.
This is a topic that's been settled years ago.
It is a shame that Reggie can't let it go....especially given that he made his bones during the era when tunnel boats ran away and hid from vee bottoms....and he raced a tunnel.
The dynamic here is that Vees are considered more appealing on the retail side (cabin space, price, etc) so the vee manufacturers have to counter the performance disadvantages with hyperbole....and ridiculous horsepower "displays". Add to that the fact that there are some B-A-A-D cat designs out there....and you have the basis for this debate. (I'd take an Apache, Fountain, OL, Cig etc... over any California cat)
Bottom line HP for HP....... length for length.......take the quality cat over the quality Vee.....every time. Of course this applies to max performance........ for creature comfort and domesticity, as I have repeatedly said,..... buy a Sea Ray.
