Everyone has a story about this horrible day: I was in the San Jose, Calif., airport waiting to catch a flight to Kansas City for an assignment on Lake of the Ozarks.
Obviously, the flight never took off. It took until well past noon until the airline could return our bags. It was a procedure they weren't used to performing on such a large scale.
At one point during the morning, the well-intended (but mistakenly so) airport officials turned off all the televisions in the airport. After the thousands of us watching the horror almost rioted, they turned the televisions back on.
I watched both towers come down with arms around complete strangers. Like many of you, I wept with people I'd never seen before and would never see again.
I made one phone call. I called my wife and told her to keep the kids away from the television. They didn't need to see the horror. They'd know about it soon enough.
About a year later, Bob Teague of Powerboat magazine and I talked about how polite and cooperative and unified everyone, passengers and employees, was in the months that followed Sept. 11. We were better to each other. We were family.
We shook our heads at how quickly we went back to our impatient, "Just get me there!" ways.
"Remember after 9/11 when everyone was nice to each other in airports and on planes?" Teague said. "That's how it should be. Always."
We all have a prayer for Sept. 11, so here's mine: That we remember when we travel that we are one nation and one family, and regardless of politics and opinions, we need to treat each other that way. That is one way to honor those who died on the worst day in your nation's history.
