I have a 97 1 ton 4x4, the exaact same set up and have 83000 miles of trouble free towing. It tows my boat, 10,000 lb bobcat trailer and a 39 ft travel trailer, all with out knowing its there. I tow a dump trailer every day around to job sights and that weighs around 10,00lbs loaded. I leave it in OD all the time and manually shift into 3rd going down hills for extra breaking effect. Don,t worry. Also I have a 97 Suburban 2500, with th 454 as well and that tows also and has 53000 miles on

Your truck will have the 4L80E. You can tow in OD. It is a well built trans. We have built many of them(usually electronic failures), and they are beefy. Cattitude and Wally are 100% correct.

We have all got so accustomed to O/D rpms that are silly low for gas mileage. I just pulled a 10000 lb boat 1300 miles last week 3200 rpm at 75 mph. Those motors will run for ever at that rpm. Your boat does all it day. Lugging it will kill the gas mileage and the motor. Remember the 60's muscle cars? No o/d and 4:10 rear ends, now that was some rpm out on the highway. 3000 miles is long boring trip. Truck will be fine. Don't forget the trailer bearings, tires, brakes, etc.

I believe the biggest problem was the torque converter locking up and diverting fluid away from the trans. I suspect that shifting to drive would unlock the converter and allow the trans to be better lubed.
I had a buddy that had a 2500 truck (95, 97?)) with the diesel. On the door jamb, there was a sticker telling "Not to tow in OD".
That said, I guess the biggest consideration is what the trans temp is.

I burnt up the 40L80e tranny in my 1991 Dually pulling that kind of load. I was told all of the things that you are and I still would tow in OD on the flat's. It lasted about 2 years before it went soft! And when we pulled it out the mechanic said that it was a replacement tranny, so it had been replaced before. When you get back flush it out and put new fluid in it!
The tranny's are chevy's weakest kink!
That why they now have the Allison!
