man, i cannot believe i am just hearing about this now...my head has got to be up my ass...Phil was one of my favorite customers and i had no idea he had passed. Wow...I am so so sorry for his family. Rest in Peace my friend...

STV was designed and built by Roark Summerfield in Hendersonville, TN and rigged by Mike Curtis of Curtis Marine for many years. Mike has personally blown over three of them while testing new boats after rigging but before delivery.

I owned an STV in the early 90's just like the one shown in the picture in this thread. It was great fun and ran 97 mph with a pumped up 250 Evinrude.

Correct... Triad now builds at least some of the STV models. I checked but I think their website is down at this time.
I live in Hendersonville where they were built and I stopped by their shop on a regular basis. They were 18' long and built strong, but very light, about 700 lbs., plus motor, steering, throttle, and fuel. They usually carried two in the front buckets and two in a very tight rear "bench/twin bucket".
They run nose high just like the picture shows and I personally had a bigger fear of stuffing than going over backward since I put it through a wave once. You would be amazed at the water they could handle as long as you stayed in the throttle. Let off for a big upcoming boat wake and the nose comes down and boom you've got a face full of water.
I've often thought of finding another one just for calm days.
I sold my boat to a freind who ran it a couple years then sold it to a guy in Clarksville, TN. Soon after he got the nose too high and it flipped over backward. He really got busted up including a broken pelvis, but he survived. The boat was totalled.
I don't know what happened in this paticular case, but from my experience the STV Pro-Comp Ski, which is shown in the picture, were built strong, but with weight in mind. These boats run on the edge to be really fast and when it goes bad, it goes bad really fast.
Just thought I'd add my .02 since I had personal experience with STV's.
