Manatee to stay on endangered species for now
(Last updated: December 5, 2007 3:53 PM)
The manatee will stay endangered for now after the Florida Fish and and Wildlife Conservation Commission today voted to approve the manatee management plan and deferred a decision about rule changes to reclassify manatees from endangered to threatened.
Commissioners also directed staff to re-examine the species listing process and bring back alternatives, a press release from the agency’s Web site said. Staff will work with stakeholders to get input about alternatives.
Commissioners said they heard the comments from stakeholders and the governor and want to consider a new paradigm for the listing process.
“An imperiled species listing process should be designed in a way that it is easy for the public to understand,” said Kipp Frohlich, team leader for the manatee plan. “A listing process should not be a source of confusion or divisiveness.”
The management plan and reclassification had been scheduled for consideration at the September meeting, but actions were deferred at the request of Gov. Charlie Crist.

We really need to start electing officials that have some BALLS! At both the state and federal levels, they forget they are there to do the will of the people not to just better their political position.

Well said, I'm dissappointed in Gov. Christ's initial delayment of the first meeting, "Needing more time to review the data". They have had the data for years now!!!!!!!!
