Not going to touch this topic, but pit-bull did have a bad-azz 2.5 on that velocity! Pit their are other sites for bashing and name calling. The mystique about OSO is that for performance boating you can learn or ask about anything pertaining to a boat and usually get a response. There are several reputable builders that frequent this site, and I for one appreciate their knowledge. Their are also several knowledgeable hobbiest and racers that frequent this site. If you have an opinion, or facts and/or stories you would like to share about your experiences then feel free to share them. Try to let your opinion be heard without being argumentative or running off any of the other valuable members here.

JC is perv. If you want to run smack about him that's understandable, but he does build nice motors in Zul's bathroom during his lunch break.

T.C. did up 2---496's 18 years ago, 9.8 chevy 4-bolt main blocks, oliver std. length rods 2-4.25 stroke cranks out of some ol'merc. 482's with Wiseco pistons w/raised pin height beeat em to death, spun um-up hard, lots of hours, just stuff I came upon, luved em, not the best, but they served me well ! p.s. and get this the crank counter weights had to be cut down @ the balance shop so that the pistons would not interfere, but then again that was 18 years ago, oh well how we learn. oh ya runnin 2-540's now w/6.385 rods. J

Boat ran 98 mph with medium pulleys (1057hp),1.50 ratio max worx drive turning a 32 pitch labbed merc 4 blade prop a little past 6000 rpm's,full hyd steering. Back to the short stroke/larger bore 502 vs 540 argument,I was skeptical about running a 4.250 stroke/6.385 rod combo,the thought of having the oil ring over the wrist pin with a rail support,pistons with a fairly short skirt,extra side loading,cyl wall flex,etc,etc worried me going from a 4.00 stroke. After consulting with Tyler Crocket,Rick Lapouttre,Bob Teague and a few others (I don't know anybody in new york) I got the same answer-with MODERN blocks (like my dart block),cyl load/flex is a non issue,especially at the rpm's a marine engine's valve train is going to be limited to,modern piston technology has been using the rail supports for the oil rings very succesfully for years (what used to be custom is off the shelf stuff today). The added benefits of the extra cylinder fill from the increased stroke with resulting hp gains and increased tq were worth the decrease in piston life. Is there a measureable difference in piston life between a short deck 540 vs a 502,I would have to say there is but you could also argue a 502 would have MORE friction from the increased surface area of the longer piston skirt. Back to the marine aspect of it,if you were trying to only achieve the same hp goal with both displacements the 540 is going to make equal tq and hp approx 450 rpm's earlier (assuming a 6000 rpm hp peak on the 502 ), would you rather cruise at 5000 rpm's for extended periods of time or 4550?
