anybody ever priced themselves out of the market?

I believe it all depends on if you plan on staying in the sport offshore powerboating for a while. You have a nice dominator that you could build some nice 502's or 540's and pull some good numbers and be relatively happy. Put the stock power (365's?) on up in the garge or sell to offset the cost. If you plan on upgrading boats take the stock power out of the new boat and swap into the boat your selling.
Thats my plan, keep a set of high HP engines around and buy and sell everything with stock or no power. Then you only need to upgrade power once.

1. figure on spending what you can afford, so you'll only end up spending 2x what u can afford.
2. don't worry about selling it, its not a stock.

And what's the difficult part about that decision??? That's a no-brainer!!
Bought a '89 F311 in 2000 (always loved the Formulas & Cigs) with 454 mags/Bravos. Beautiful boat and well cared for. In '03 I decided to go through the motors (600 hours), drives and do some interior work. Bolsters were perfect but the sunpad and rear seat were beginning to get dry and crack. The short version is, $16K later I had the 454's making 509 and 505hp, plenty of bling under the hatch, fresh drives, new props, fresh interior, new stereo etc. Was it an investmet? Absolutely not but the enjoyment I go out of doing the job and the resulting gain of around 10mph was worth it to me.
With the current Gun, I won't make any changes (I don't think). Probably will wind up moving up to a TS Gun or Tiger so why waste the money on the current straight bottom boat? I think I have somewhat learned my lesson! Yeah, right!!

I spent $40k on upgrades to my 29 Outlaw last season. I knew it wasn't smart, I knew I would never get my money back & I never gave it a second thought.
Now that I've gone thru all the work, I would have rather spent the money on a new boat......that I would have wished had more power.
When I do sell my boat, it will be with stock power & drives.
Right now, I'm having fun with it. That is what matters to me.
