Default Marine Alternators, same as Automotive?

I think the subject says it all..

I can get an Automotive alternator for much cheaper than a marine alternator. Is there a difference between the two that makes it worth the extra $150 for the marine version?

Might as well replace mine while ive got easy access to it because its on its last leg..

Yes. The sheilding is different and there are the important purple and red wires that activate with the ignition system.

Pay the extra money. Keep you from lighting the thing on fire by accident one day.

Spark protection.
USCG compliance means your bilge won't light up and blow the hatch off.
Will the auto alternator charge the battery, yes.
I wouldn't do it.
Buy the marine alternator.

Anyway, I found them on Ebay. They are in Dallas. They offer "Load Boss" alternators and the company is named "Alterstart".
