Just so there is no misconception here.
The race does not run pass the Statue of Liberty.
The south turn is at Liberty Landing just north of NY Harbor.
I would hate to see any of your spectators end up out on Liberty Island looking for a great spot to watch the race only to find out they would not be able to see it...
People have mentioned that they would only wish Carbonell would not run this race up against the Point Race. I say that it is not making much of an impact on Point anyway. If the NY race wasn't running, maybe OPA might pick up 4 or 6 boats.
On the other hand even with them running, I don't see Point losing any boats because of it.
There is a huge boat count coming to Point with a whole lot of spectators. Many spectators from North Jersey and NY will be "Down the Shore" for the whole weekend anyway...
Not to mention the $100,000 plus purse and no entry fee race.
I even heard OPA offered Carbonell his teams to race for free so everyone can be together. JC obviously did not even consider it.
No big deal really. It only effects the 10 or 12 boats that will be in NY.
If it was not on the same day, I would be in NY, but I have to follow the majority of the teams which right now will be in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ.
Have a safe run up in NY. If anyone cares to come for a visit we are only 60 minutes south from Liberty Landing by car, even less time if you come by boat ! Huge parade is on Friday night and big parties Fri & Sat.
Whatever you chose to do, be safe !

It's really a shame that the races can't be scheduled on different weekends......
I'm pretty sure the the NY races have been on that weekend every year since I've been attending. It's also in my back yard but, since I have more acquaintance's at OPA I'll be making a right hand turn at Sandy Hook and heading south to Point Pleasant early Sunday morning.
Good luck to the teams in NYC!
