Any Dodge truck owners with Rear end problems?
I just got rid of my old 1995 Dogde 1500 because the rear end was going out in it 141,000 miles. Now I find out that a guy at work his Dodge truck is in the same boat but he only has 56,000 and it it is a 1998. I was just wondering if there other dodge owners with the same problem.

Problems
I have a '98 1500 5.9L 2wd Dodge quad cab. At 40k the pinion bearing went out on it.
-Also, another problem Dodges have, with all of the motors V6 and V8, is the intake plenum gasket goes bad. You'll know this when you start to experience spark knock when under a load. It eventually gets so bad that high octane fuel doesn't help, and it will start doing it under mild acceleration at highway speeds without a load.
I replaced mine at around 50k.
If you are experiencing this, be sure to get the entire intake kit from the dealer that has new intake bolts in it. You cannot reuse the originals.

I have a 96' 4X4 with a diesel and 160000. So far I have had no problems........................... But, the other day I thought I felt a little grinding back there when I was backing up. Is this the beginning of the end??? Anything I can do before major damage is caused?? Help!! (I'm so scared!!)

There is nothing you can do to avoid a pinion bearing going out if it is already on its way. You could drain and fill the rear end and check for fine shavings. Mine started making a sound that sounded as if I had big mudder tires on the back. At first, it only made the sound under acceleration. It only gets worse the more you drive it. In fact, after a while, it started doing it all the time, just louder under a load.
When I took it apart, the pinion bearing was pitted all to hell, the race was OK, and all of the other bearings were fine too. I went ahead and replaced all bearings and races anyway.
If you go to do it yourself, you need a special spanner wrench that goes in through the axle tube to adjust backlash.
