Former longtime Cashmere resident Russ Nyland and his 20-year-old daughter Ashleigh died Saturday in a shooting in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Also wounded was Debbie Nyland, Russ Nyland’s wife and Ashleigh’s mother.
The deaths and injury were confirmed today by Jolene Beem, who, along with her husband Jon, are business partners with the Nylands in the Cashmere business, Valley Interiors.
“They were just great people who would do anything for you,” Beem said. “They were full of life.”
Russ, 42, and Ashleigh Nyland were killed when a gunman entered a home in Lake Havasu City and began shooting Saturday. Also killed were the gunman’s estranged girlfriend — the mother of his two children — 23-year-old Deborah Langstaff; Langstaff’s 24-year-old boyfriend, Primo Verdone; and 20-year-old Brock Kelson.
Debbie Nyland, 44, was also shot, according to Lake Havasu City police. She was being treated at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, where her condition was listed as fair Monday afternoon.
Jolene Beem said she and Jon bought Valley Interiors from the Nylands in about 2005, when the Nylands moved to Arizona. She said the Nylands used to winter in the Lake Havasu area and liked it so much that they decided to move there permanently. She said that the Nylands had become partners in the Cashmere business again about two months ago.
The Nylands owned a business at Lake Havasu that helped other boaters who were having trouble with their boats, Beem said.
The Nyland’s son, Derek of Cashmere, was comforted Saturday by the Beems’ son, Michael, before Derek caught a flight to Arizona that evening to be with his mother, Beem said.
The Associated Press reported that the shooting took place during a birthday party for Verdone.
After the shooting, the gunman, identified as 26-year-old Brian Diez, fled with his two children, ages 4 years and 13 months. He was found dead early Sunday at a California home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. The children were unharmed.
Lake Havasu City police Sgt. Joe Harrold said Diez was arrested Aug. 13 for violating a protection order that Langstaff had against him, the Associated Press reported
