What does this do?
What is that shaft going between the boxes? Is it something to keep them straight or does it make sure they both turn the same? Just curious...

Internal tie bar that is mounted to the steering tillers but with the standoff boxes it's not internal anymore and that was a creative way of retaining it. It's common to run a dual tie bar setup on race boats.
