The polyform is a softer rubbery type material,The others are alitter harder, now if you have gelcoat it really want matter. But if ya got a custom paint job"clearcoated" it will scratch/Chafe it if there is motion/waves .
Also the the cheaper, west marine/taylormade type cloth covers are coarser.
Also you have to maintain all covers and fenders, like if against a pier if it gets wood/concrete in the cover, etc.
dried up salt water on both will scratch the paint also.

Question for the folks using the round buoy type fenders. Do you find you dont need fender covers for these? I'm wondering if its still necessary since the fenders can roll easily.

I get the idea behind the fender covers but I don't understand the cult following behind them.
5-7 years ago I had never herd of a fender cover. They didn't start to become popular until owners in the high end of the sport had them custom made with their boat name on them.
Again, I get it. They are cool as they are functional. But when did a good fender with no cover become obsolete? And when did not using a fender cover make me a jackass.

It's not about rolling. It's about side to side action of the boat(s). Fenders don't damage boats fore-aft. But when you are rafted on a wall/dock, or especially when rafted to another boat...
...wave action forces the fenders to move up and down against the paint and/or gelcoat. Any sand/grit/splinters or whatever garbage on the fender will damage the surface.
Now, the SAME goes for crud in/on the fender cover. However, you can maintain your fender covers by washing them and replacing them as needed...
...which is KEY.
