Energy is one thing we HAVE to have, food is also another thing we HAVE to have. The gov has been meddling in agriculture for decades! The subsidies, and farm credits have pretty much killed the small farmer and allowed the big farm corporations to all but take over our entire agriculture industry. The US still produces a big part of the world's rice, wheat and other grains. However, the gov sets the price our farmers can "sell" their product to OTHER countries, while we pay premium for OTHER countries natural resources. Our current foreign policy SUCKS! If the middle east was forced to pay fair market price for our grain, their oil wouldn't taste so good!
