Ilmor High-Performance unveils MV8 570 Small Block

You could be right! And yes, that would be a substantial weight savings for the smaller boats. My complete power/drive package (588/trans/ASD #7) weighs in just under 1,200 pounds. When I started my build, I first looked into having Mike build me a set of large ci small blocks, but the 200 pound per engine savings wasn't worth having to run high compression/high rpm motors to equal the horsepower of my pump gas/6,500 rpm 588s. IF this weight of 810 pounds is for the complete power/drive package, Ilmor has themselves a great new product for the under 30' boat market.........

The weight of the MV8 570 is 810lbs with dress, headers, mounts, bellhousing, and fluids. This does not include a transom/drive.

So please explain to me how Ilmor is claiming to be 400 pounds lighter than a comparable BBC? Again, my 800 hp 588 ci Sterlings are 855 pounds with the same equipment. That's only a difference of 45 pounds, not 400 (not to mention the 230 hp difference on 91 octane pump gas!).

Good catch! Interesting observation on the intake restrictor. In 2008 (LeMans & ALMS) trim the LS 7.0 liter engines were mandated (2) 31.2mm orifices, for a total intake area of 1529 mm². That’s 2.370 in² total (the approximate size of a half dollar each) of inlet area feeding a 427 cid engine. At that level of restriction the engine made peak TQ @ 4400 RPM, went into choke @ 4800 RPM, peak HP @ 5200, and carried to 6200 RPM. It made 580bhp @ 5200 RPM on E-10 and 590 bhp on E-85. Quite an achievement for an engine restricted to that degree.

The stated weight is the engine only BUT is full of fluids ready to be dropped in. I believe other stated weights for some of the competition includes the whole package, WE DO NOT. This is a closed cooled engine with CMI headers. There is a good amount of fluids included in that number.
Should have some more info soon so stay tuned!!

I forgot that this new LSX based engine uses the tall deck LSX IRON block and with all accessories, freshwater cooling and headers it indeed probably weighs about 800lbs. with a transom assy and drive it should still come in about 1025lbs and as such should be about 200 pounds or so under a HP565 that Mercury Racing is now offering. In a twin installation that could translate to 400+ pounds and in a 28-36 ft performance hull that could be a nice plus as well as the added rpms this engine will run at. In any event I know Ilmor will get the real total facts and data out for OSO'ers and I am sure this will be a great performer in the right applications.

Btw. is the weight you calculated in a previous post, the weight of your 550 LS alu motor w/o manifolds?
Thanks
