Long or Short OutDrive life ! How many or few hours have you seen ?
I have shredded an outdrive that I thought would be the last mechanical thing to fail on my boat . I'm guessing when my boat builder bought it he probably paid about 25K for it and I have destroyed it to the point that the manufacturer is trying to rebuild it but can't' get it apart . My biggest problem is that I only have 160 hours of light use on it ... No hole shots , No ocean wave or finding cruisers wake to jump , and very little full throttle !
The math is basically like this 25K @ 160 hours = $156.25/hr ...
So how much have you gotten out of your drives and under what conditions ?

With Xr drives if I get 200 hrs I'm happy
Anything over 150 is borrowed time and when one goes the other is close behind so just do them both at once
One of the reasons for going to Imco scx drives

Well anything can break, look at NASCAR the engines are put together with the best parts possible by people that really know their stuff yet sometimes motors blow in just a few miles.
And it's possible that my scx could go in under 100 hrs but the odds are that they won't
On the other hand my 400ss has Xr drives and I run in the ocean plus it's a heavy boat and I got "200 hrs on them, never expected that

BMax, SCX, or Konrad are the only ones that are actually stronger anyway, the rest are just XR gears in a beefed up case.
I got 82 hours out of my upper gears in my Imco SC before the pitting was too much for me to be comfortable.
The lower gears are at 143 hours right now and are due for a change (but still holding strong and not putting out loads of metal)
All hours with 700+ N/A hp.

Arneson Surface Drives
I got well over 10 years and 2000 hours on my #8 Arneson Drives and have only changed the oil a few times. Granted I am running diesels with a top speed of 50mph but I am pushing almost 20,000lbs. I know guys with Arnesons running much more HP and MPH with similar results. They cost a lot up front but have way paid off for me.
