Hmmm i guess i got lucky then <knock on wood> I bought a 1995 Grand. Off eBay no less!!! And have had no problems yet!! I changed ALL the fluids in the truck and all runs well. Engine (5.2) idles smooth. Trans shifts nice and the truck loos ok. I mean what do i expect from a 1995 with 113k miles on it thats black!
I have been reading up on these trucks on some Jepp forums and the things to look for from what i can tell are as follows:
*AC Drain gets blocked and starts to collect water and creating mildew thus creating a bad smell in the truck
*If full time 4wd turn the wheel full lock and do figure 8's. if the truck jerks its a sign the Viscus cupler is about to go out. ($800 alone for part from dealer!!!)
*There's a bulliten about the rear and front axles humming from the pinion bearings going bad after a certain time. If you hear this humming when test driving plan to spend about $400 per axle. Its usually the rear that goes bad. But i had the front go on mine. Its was only $50 in parts if you do it yourself!
*Some of the wireing in the Jeeps is not up to par if you plan on replacing bulbs with High output stuff. The headlights especially! They have harness kits for this to keep you from burning stuff up.
Other then that i love my Jeep! Moving from a Lifted crew cab dually that got 8MPG to a small Jepp that gets 18mpg was a huge change but i like it! Plus these things are FAST!!! They will surprise ALOT of cars out there! hehe
If you have the options get the 5.9. Has more torque and a little more HP
Also look for the Dana44 axle. I know they are aluminum but they are stronger then the standard Dana 35's that most come with.
hope that helps
Oh and if you want more infor on them check out this place:

Damn! I guess I have one of the great ones!
My '95 has 166,000 miles on it and I've had to change fuel pump, computer, and now my radiator leaks a bit.
But at 166,000 miles, what do ya expect!
I love the thing...bought my last girlfriend a '94 with the 5.2 and it needed at new trans at 100k but apart from that it runs fine.
Then I bought a 1993 with the V6 and that thing ran great as well. I've been very happy with my Jeeps....

Great drivetrain
I can't speak for the rest of the vehicle but.... I've had a 95 Dakota, 5.2 mag with auto, towed 5k often, ran well, traded at 40kfor a 98 Durango, 5.2 also, same great luck (Durango does have a much better rear axle than the GC) at 40 k I traded the durango for a Dodge turbodiesel- whole other class.
I do think well enough of the engine/tranny that i swapped one into my competition Jeep 3 yrs ago and never looked back- very reliable.
i can't attest to AC compressors, viscous couplings in the DS and those type issues. The 318 is well tested and the EFI system is idiot proof. The front axles are very simple/reliable, the rear axle is margininal but no more so than others in that class. Good luck!
