I called Velocity asking about what k planes to install on my 280. I wanted to install 380s but was talked out of them. I went with the 280s and am very happy. I wonder how the 380s would do though lol.

What was their reasoning?
How long are 280s, 380s?
My VR 1 has Dana hp 1000 which are 12 x 24. I have only had a chance, calm water, to run it once but no problem. When I was talking to Steve Stepp he did say that many people did overuse tabs.

Well for starters I'm not racing the boat. Basically they said the 280 was enough tab. If I remember the exact wording, "the 380 is a lot of tab".
I only use the tabs for getting on plane, if I am driving slow for tubing or water skiing, to level the boat with uneven weight distribution, side winds, or if it is really rough. I try to use no tab or as little as tab as possible because it slows the boat down.

I ran a Velocity 280 in rough and smooth water without tabs for many years. There were a few times they may have been helpful but I can't say I really missed them. I doubt that the ones on my VR 1 will get used much but I could be wrong.

I have 380s on a 27 Kryptonite and love them. It has a pad as well. I usually set them level and just extend the length of the boat. Unless its rough, then a touch lower.
Have also run a very fast 24 Progression with the same setup, as well as a 21 Challenger. Wouldnt want anything less.

Run a heavier weight oil to slow down 'big' tab movement on the small hulls, makes adjustments in settings slower more forgiving.
The long tabs on shorter hulls allow the drive to be trimmed closer to neutral in snotty conditions, by having enough tab to keep the boat flying level. This should result in more efficient speed in rough water conditions than if you were keeping the drive trimmed in to control the attitude of the boat.
