I have 800 plus hours on a pair mated to stock 454's and the throttle is applied slowly. Once up on plane we beat it to death. I bought a pair of used drives as spares but have never mounted them.

My old 29 Outlaw has over 1100 hours w 385hp mags and I don't think the drives have ever been opened. Oil change ever other motor oil change.

A bravo 1, x, or xz should theoretically last as long as a differential in a car. Having helical cut gears don't have the parasitic wear the opposed to the straight cut on the XR.

Curious if anyone has ran XZ gears in an XR with success? They are nearly half the price and are helical cut

I have a fresh set of XRs with new XZ gears from Cabellos right now. I have not run them them yet but was told they "should" be 2 mph faster and hold up just as long if not longer than the XRs, I don't know..... Upon inspecting my XRs on the boat now I have some pitting/slight flaking on one upper gear, so anyone know who has the best price on XR upper gears? I may have to do some back to back testing. OR new gears and sell ALL 4 XRs and buy something else!

From what I know.....the XZ are exactly the same as the XR except the gears. I had XZ drives and when I broke one, I moved to XR gears. As I remember, the drive with the XR gears was about 150-200 RPM lower at WOT compared to the drive with the XZ gears. Year or two later, something happened to the XZ side and then changed it to XR gears as well.

Shaun Harrington has xz gears in his drives. They work pretty well, don't wear like xr gears, and are faster/rob less power than straight cuts. He also has imco boxes with the long input shaft that I think acts like a torsion bar and absorbs some of the shock load.

So why hasn't the Bravo or similar outdrives been redesigned as something more reliable ? High performance engines are.
or
Is it a bad design concept period regardless of who makes them ? Yup.

Why is no one talking about alpha drives?
