Like I said I don't care about your finances, I was trying to make a suggestion to consider spending more on a newer boat to offset maintenance cost you probably will have with buying a fixer upper. It's kind of like buying an older BMW, by the time you spend all the money keeping it together you could have gotten a newer one for the same amount of money and had more time to enjoy it, plus it's worth more at the end. I always preach to people to buy the newest nicest boat, car, plane, ect you can afford and you will save money plus it's worth more and easier to sell when your ready to get rid of it. Again just a suggestion. Good luck with whatever you get.

One more very important thing to think about with these choices, have you ever driven a twin??
They are a blast, totally different, turn 360* in both length, pull straight sideways to or from dock, unbelievable manurivalibility and most important, the dash looks sooo darn good with all them gauges.

Would love to have twins but the one I'm going to look at on Sunday is not in great shape. I am going to look at a 242ls tomorrow with a 454 that's in good shape. It has the alpha with a 17p and he says it will do 53. Is that about right for that setup? Is there a way to squeeze a few more out?

Take your phone gps don't trust the speedo.
What rpm is he turning, that motor is rated at 4,200-4,600 rpm.
There is a post "best propeller for my 242" has speed / prop / rpm data
re: The twins, if you don't mind doing work and subing work out you can do a lot with $3,000

Thanks I'll look that up! The thing is the 454 is in better shape and he's asking 2,000 less to start. Wouldn't 3k into a 454 yield some power and be less maintenance with a single setup? The only thing is that it is the alpha drive and he knows that's a hard selling point so I'm hoping for some negotiation room.

Exactly my plan exactly, now you can go with 450-500hp take-out on the frugal if-if-if you are maried to that boat!
Just getting mine running reliable so i can start on the brovo fund.

Well both of the 242's that I went to look at were a bust. The one with twin 350's was in rough shape and the interior needed work. It had some ugly orange/Brown craps running out of the hull drain. the one with the 454 had a hole in the hull right under the starboard side of the gas tank on the end of the rib, it had hull water coming out of it. The guy was nice about it though and said he didn't know about the hole so he paid for my gas that I wasted to go see it. I told him I'd give him $3500 for it but he was just going to part it out himself.

I think you should be looking at 24-7 boats if you are staying 24 foot and wanna run the great lakes. there is a rather nice 79 Carrera just closed on ebay at 8000 no bids. long island. will handle big water better than anything else under 26. of course it is a TRS drive...item number
