Thanks again everyone. I will definitely plan the chicago run carefully when I feel I'm comfortable enough with the boat to do it. Someone told me running along the shoreline would make it safer, but I'm not sure if there's any truth to that. And I looked at the engine again last night to try to find out if it's indeed a Mag motor. The plastic cover on the carb is missing and I can't seem to find a Mercruiser serial number, but I checked the intake manifold with a magnet and it's aluminum which is specific to the Mag motors correct? The casting number on the starboard bellhousing is 10237297 which comes up as a Gen VI 454 roller motor.

I had a 95 with a carbed 454 Mag. It would run a max of 61 mph. Saved some money and bolted a Whipple on it and bumped it up to 77 mph. I loved that boat. handled well, even at LOTO it handled the water there just fine.

I remember that boat in the powerboat magazine under one of the dealer classifieds, 2006ish. 98, same graphics, same trailer. Said it was supercharged I think. Must be the same boat unless that is a real common graphic package.

Congrats on the boat and welcome to the Baja family. I ran a 88 240 Sport for a good ten years and enjoyed it very much. Basically the same boat as what you have now, just an older version. Hope yours is as reliable to you as mine was to me.
