Thx, AZ
Fusion 360 software by autodesk.

We mainly use solidworks but have one guy that uses fusion. fusion would be a lot cheaper and easier to learn, and it does basically the same thing.

You can see in the upper pocket it started pulling out and going deeper as it went around making a pyramid then on the next pocket it went through.

If this was a customers part we would have to start over and it would be a costly mistake. But since its mine where the hole is at it does not matter . I was going to machine a couple of holes into it after I test fit it in the boat so I can see inside to inspect the spring dampener and for water drainage and its on the backside under the engine so I will just call it an inspection port. Had the end mill pulled out a little sooner when it was doing the flat part it would have ruined the part.
So what your saying is you should never pull out, otherwise it makes a mess!!!!

I have done that same thing, I stopped using collets for that reason, seems like the harder you push them they will start pulling down and wreck the part, and I wouldn't want to have to remake that part. That's got to be 8+hr.

Really interested to see how your Diesel hold up, I have been around high performance diesel for a LONG time and most stock block don't like the abuse of holding it 1k for long periods of time. I hope I'm wrong as you have a ton of money sitting out there at II.

Kidturbo that's exactly what I was thinking of, this would give loads of options to fine tune the setup.
This is going to be the next modification on mine although I need an external unit with around a 6" drop and I don't think SCS or Arneson do a 6 with changeable gears.

If you have a machine shop you could make a new product line selling those bellhousings, this Cummins build is going to get many people thinking about going with light high power diesels
I thought about it before but diesels horsepower to weight ratio does not always make sense. But after watching youtube videos of 4x4 trucks pulling 8 second 1/4 miles things in the brain start to imagine and working, then comes your posts with your megayacht skater..imagine no more rebuilding engines every 150 hours.

Tyson,

I must say this thread is very impresive. I just finished reading it from start to finish. The amount of work you and your wife have put into this project is amazing. Everything hand made, he even made his own transmissions for his first go at it with the first set of motors.... all I have to say is WOW! And good luck with your endurance run!

If you need a paramedic/firefighter/ex soldier /backwoodsmech I'm your guy..... I see there is plenty of seats

subscribing....

These are exactly a 6" drop. One I posted is 2 gear, other side is a 4 gear with output same as engine crankshaft rotation. They currently mount inside the transom box on the WMD's. However, with a case half change these can also be bolted directly to a transmission, crash box, or tucked inside a #6 extension box if needed. Patrick's done a decent job of designing a very compact universal drop shaft platform. Never got the exposure they deserved.

If your interested I have a dozen or so spare cases, extra shafts, and many assorted gear sets. Don't see us ever using all of it. I know Pat still cuts gears for these, so might be an option for ya. As Tyson can attest, after the first one, it's simply load material, hit run button, repeat.. lol

Also know someone who modified an ASD8 chain drop to 6". He said it was actually easy, I'll try to get ya some pics. Only had to machine out some new bearing bosses and shorten the chain.

Kidturbo I will put something on your tread with regards to this, sounds like a good option as I have two ASD8-10 sitting on the shelf.

Looks like emissions could be a big problem! do the Cummins really smoke that much at 1000hp + ?

Can they really turn 6500 rpm for more than a few seconds?

In a boat you should be able to dial in the torque curve and greatly minimize smoke output. Usually on a diesel the most smoke you will see is right before the turbo(s) light then maybe a small haze there after, since the prop and crankshaft are always at the same speed(prop and crank are direct coupled) you should in the fuel map be able todo pull fuel in area to clean it up.

6500rpm aint going to happen at least for very long with a stock blocked cummins. Not unless you make it a 13:1 motor and plan on starting it on ether ever time. You would greatly have to lighten the rotating mass up so the block would stop moving at those rpms for any length of time. I cant remember what the number are off the top of my head by the difference in stress on the crank and the main caps from 4500rpm to 6500rpm is something like 45x more. The main caps walk almost 4x more then the bearing tolerance allow. Granted this is for a mS when you see the highest Cylinder Pressures.
