Struggling with motivation for testing with $6.50 a gallon for high test and 95° heat here in Ohio so working on prop set ups.

My sixth and final set of wheels are 28” Merc Choppers that need modified to work on my JohnRudes.

Easy enough to do but one of those things were you measure three times before drilling out a half inch of the splines!

They still have the weed cutters on the front of them too which I am removing.

A jig for drilling hubs on my drill press.

My wife stole my duct tape so had to use masking and try to be very, very careful!

Chose there based on ****ty weather forecast.

Next door neighbor joined us w/their 22’ Searay cuddy.

Got in Fri afternoon in time to settle in before heading out on the Huron River boardwalk bar tour.

Great food, great band, great friends!

Anyone looking to play up there, w/o going to the islands, Huron is class A!

First 1/2 of Sat was best bet for boating weather.
Neighbors elected to ride w/us, so first time on the big lake w/92 gls gas and 4 adult aboard!

Boat ran, behaved great!
Still coming to terms w/tab settings bellow 40.
VERY, very sensitive!

Also learned that dropping the Jack plates is mandatory for docking in wind!

My theory of wife being OK w/me lettin it of its leash w/her in backseat was debunked when she smacked me in the back when trying to set up to fly it through 2’ chop!

Motors are both still rich at idle and need more tuning and port motor wasn’t keeping up w/starboard the short time I’d get to let er eat.

W/so many changes each time, it is hard to learn much.

Want to start prop testing but that would be worthless until both motors are happy.

May try and get some Gary time and head to the local pond w/my jet kit and test wheel one day after work.

Thx Joe. You did that! And no, that wasn’t at the dock!

sounded like a great spring run!

That’s why I work on junk.

If I screw it up?
Who cares.

BTW, I caught your comments on doing the jet like your dads and replied but it got lost in the the transfer to this thread.
WAY COOL!

A guy by Buckeye Lake just listed/sold two ‘70’s era Chris Craft barrel back jets on CL!

Always loved their gorgeous lines.
One ended up 5 mls from me.

I used to pick on jets until going to an end of season OB/drag race free for all on a river in Houston yrs ago.

A guy showed up w/a 250 lb Texas Tunnel w/a blown big block on juice!

He pitted 5 boats down from where we were.
He brought 3 bottles of juice and drained them in 2 hrs!

I now do a lot of investigating before picking on a jet!

BTW, he took on all comers and was big man on campus that day!

Hah!!! There are some fast jets, but not many back then, most were dogs compared to the 2 stroke screamers. My dads was fast, It had to be the setback pump and shaved the hull. Plus a bbc with a high rise. The only boat that we found faster was one of those Shiada’s with Twin Gale Banks turbos, my dad held on but he was just a little more faster… can’t wait to restore the sistership I found!!

I remember that era.

I never got passed by one but probably just never crossed the right guys path.

I remember their was a hi end jet pump shop in Cols towards the end.

I learned the effect of a good, blue printed pump after replacing A 460 Ford in a customers 20 foot Taylor jet.

He paid us to take it to Buckeye Lake to break it in and check for leaks and the thing was an absolute turd!

The motor was very very strong.
Ordered it from Jasper and they hit it out of the park but the pump was ****.

I don’t think it broke 50.

What did your dad have, that you found???

Dons pump in Dayton Ohio used to blue print pumps and install inducer impellers. That went a long way to helping them out. Also using the right main impeller for the rpm of the motor.

They were / are fun simple boats. Back in the day everyone in those days knew how to work on a car motor so the simplicity was attractive. That and the river we boated on you didn’t have to worry about hitting stuff as much.

The real monsters were the V drives, those were bad a$$. I remember we were selling a shaker hood scoop to our high school metal shop teacher and when we got to his house he had a Superbird in the drive. We thought that was cool.

Till we seen the blown Hemi sanger V drive!

Yes, the Sanger V-drives with a blown Hemi are rarer than Superbirds these days.

When I was a teenager, my brother had a rich kid buddy that had a 18’ Sanger, flat bottom V-drive w/an L-88 w/dual 4’s.

Told me it did 140!
Maybe 100……

Towed it w/a new, white Eldorado rag top!

I remember him showing up at the ramp one time and asked us to help him w/the boat as it was blowing pretty good.

Also remember he had a gorgeous, VERY well endowed girl w/him.

When I questioned him about taking a flat bottom out in those conditions, he laughed and said that was why he was taking it out.

Pointed to the girl and said he wanted to watch her boobs bounce!

I think I was 13.
Not sure which I wanted more.

The girl or the boat!

LOL, great story Gary. Well at that age life's confusing, but I bet a year or two later, you wanted it All.
