Any yanmar dealers on the board?

It’s really going to depend on which engines he ends up with, but prob in the 550-600 range at best. The main question is what hull is he looking at using and how many people is he planning to move

Hey RatMan -- Randy Sweers had that package of 3 complete 480hp Yanmars, trannies, and ASD 8's, for the money I would give him a call... I think you will be surprised at what you need to get that kind of weight on plane... They were mechanical engines -- just turn down the fuel screw if you are trying to get economy... id rather have the ability of turning it up if you need it to get on plane... besides the trannies, and drives are what you will need for the torque... you won't get away with ASD 6's and small trannies.
I've had 15 people on an Aluminum 27' patrol boat and struggled to get it on plane with 230hp Volvos and Douprop outdrives. My engine have the superchargers also to give it the boost below the turbo spool....
To Obrien's post --- I agree...

The 480 yanmar are not a true mechanical engine that you can just turn the fuel screw on the injection pump. However a yanmar dealer can adjust the power levels with a laptop. Only downside to the 480 is it was not a commercially rated engine like the 440 would be. Being as they are used though that may not matter. I installed the 440 ly3’s along with asd8’s in a 53’ people mover that ended up going to Tanzania. It was more of a catamaran. The hull and deck alone were 17k pounds before the enclosed top and any rigging was done. With the triples the boat ran 53 mph with a moderate load.

There are 3 companies running the same hull that holds 45 ppl. I think it’s an 18* hull but might be a 16*. One guy runs 2 Suzuki 200hp v6 another the Suzuki 250s and the third Yamaha 300s. He broke the Yamaha Lowers two or three times the first year, i know the arnesons will be bullet proof at this hp level.
I’m pretty sure the yanmars will make more tq that any of the listed gasoline outboards. They have to buy new engines every two years or less for 55-60k dollars a pair. They burn 150 gallons round trip I should burn 42 or 43.
What do you guys think the performance diff will be between a turbo diesel and gas 4t outboards?
They run at 4600 to 5k rpms in the smaller 4t engines at cruise. I will run 2800/2900 rpms and should burn 5 gal per hr per engine... I don’t want the weight and fuel burn of the bigger yanmars. And cost etc.
Please share your opinions guys. I’m wanting about a 38/40 mph cruise. Thx guys.

I think getting on plane with diesels in a boat that runs 75/85mph is way different from a slow cruiser diesel. I saw a dude with blower motors and 6s with airiation tubes in his sixes due to running 37 pitch screws.
I think with a fairly mild pitch in a 2800 rpm cruise should be a problem getting in plane. It pls correct me if you think I’m wrong. Thx, Rm
