The automated landing of the first stage and the Dragon's emergency jettison capability during any phase of flight are quite amazing achievements. Especially when you consider they have an actual budget to stay within.
One of the engineers compared the first stage landing to dropping a pencil from the Empire State building and making it land eraser first onto a postage stamp.

Boeing is their competition. SpaceX simply out performed them. Not sure what Lockheed contributed. NASA hasn't been able to send anything to the international space station since 2011. We haven't been back to the moon since the early 70's. I'm happy to see private industry and good old American enguinity getting things done. Some of Elons' future plans are even more amazing, like 100 million pound payloads, sending humans to Mars, free high speed internet for the masses. Go Elon!!!
