Trying to get the right yr if that makes a difference, im a GM guy but knowledge of marine engines is minimal,

It's probably a 96-99 Vortec L31 based setup. Roller cam. I don't think the Vortec L31 went through any real changes through its production run.

Pictures would help confirm.

See if you can see the stamping on the front left pad of the block on the machined area, the block casting date will be on the other side from the casting #

If its actually the Merc serial#, it would be 0F774641 and any Merc dealer can run the serial# and give you exact details.

Apparently i need x amount of post before i can add the pictures i took, i know itll help everyone help me understand what im doing.
