do you have room for I/O's? A set of D4-260 hp Volvo's with their duo props would be very efficient and last a long time if taken care of... Or to your point a set of 6BT Cummins 330's and arneson ASD-8's would be bullet proof and allow truck mechanics to work on them....

The Outboards are compact and great for salt life but you will have the problem still of finding mechanics and parts still...

i love watching the longtail videos (Asia) many now have a 6 cylinder or v8 diesel balanced with a huge prop and long shaft they seem to work well they put them on everything over in the far east

the boat builders here aren’t very experienced building in oars engine boats. I have an incredible mechanic on staff. He maintains all my diesel generators etc and outboards. I would buy a spare lower unit to have on hand and when the engines get a lot of hours woild buy. Spare engine. Swap out one engine and rebuild it then swap and rebuild the other. For true inboard I would have to give up a lot of seats/income.
