I couldn’t afford the fuel to get out of the inlet . I have a buddy who has a buddy of his rebuilding a gutted out 54 mid 70s Hatteras at his shop at the Glades .
What a project I’ll be amazed if he finishes it before he dies , Twin 12-71s are no joke to feed either.
I’ll take my little 37 foot trawler with twin 57 hp getting 3.5 mpg over those beasts any day though if I won the lottery I’m getting Big MTUs and surface drives with a possible 5000 turbine through the Kamwae water jet so I can hit 80 knots.

There is an industrial park in Stuart Florida that has three or four of the top custom fish boat builders in the world there as their homebase.
I used to call on them and was lucky enough to see multiple projects midstream.
I remember seeing a pair of V 16 diesels waiting to be installed and a pair of five blade, 36” x 36” props with 4 inch diameter prop shaft waiting to be installed!
One builder told me the customer having a 72 foot sport fish built there used to fly in once a month and land his helicopter in the vacant lot next to the shop and walk in with a box of cash and then go climb in the boat :-)
I remember pacing one in my car, southbound on US 1 out of Melbourne where you’re right by the IC.
I guessed it to be 70 feet + and it was even w/my side mirror for 20 mls at 45 mph+!
Couldn’t believe what I was seeing and called my brother back in Ohio to tell him live play-by-play!
We figured $1500 in fuel from Melbourne to Sebastian!
Was in another one where they had custom Nida Cored marble countertops made for the galley, heads etc.
Save several hundred lbs over real marble.
Custom cut outs for sinks, fixtures etc.
$10k as I recall.
The owners wife went down to ck it after it was installed and said she hated it.
Scrapped it all started again!
When you think you have money, go ck one of these monsters out.
They are works of art!
