Free horsepower I believe is the concept. You're not going to stress the moving parts anymore with larger displacement and it will make more power. The more displacement argument in a boat just keeps getting better when you start modifying the engine with things like forced induction.

You can get the same power with a bit more compression and less radical cam and save some money and increase the time needed to rebuild the top end. Plus that also leads to minimizing reversion issues. The edelbrock torker cam is a good happy step down that allows stock lifters and springs that are WAY cheaper than the 500 ones. I personally never quite understood why merc went so low on compression and so radical on the valve train.

They controlled what they could for the blue engines, where people would put up with a more frequent service plan.

I think you nailed it. Just built for the masses vs individuals like me who are more anal about fuel, etc. I always just fill with costco premium and add star tron for the ethanol BS and never have had an issue
