I frequent OB Clarks about once a month, good bar to get loaded at.

There are several upscale hotels in down town St. Louis: Marriott, Hyatt, Adams Mark, Shariton, etc. There are also a few more modest: Courtyard, 3 Drury's, Comfort Inn (I think). If driving 20 miles to save on hotel is of interest, I suggest O'Fallion(sp), St. Peters, Fenton, suburbs. You'll find all the normal highway hotels there. You may also try accross the river in IL, but further across than what Jessie James is thinking about for an after-hours club!!! Collinsville and Edwardsville IL also have the normal highway hotels, and they are probably faster than the MO suburbs.
Personally, if you can justify it, I would stay in one of the downtown Drury's. The one at Union Station is too far to walk to the show, but Union Station has lots of touristy things to do. The other two are walking dist, and all three are converted old buildings that respect the past.
I've not stayed in a St. Louis hotel since buying a house there last year, but before then did hotel there several times a month. There are other safe areas to stay, but these are usually the best values. If you're interested in a hotel elsewhere and want my openion on the area before booking, PM or email me.
You should enjoy your stay in St. Louis; it's a nice place to weekend.
