gary teague, phaff & others smoke a merc 850 with a single whippple instead of mercs quad rotor package. the difference is merc builds way more engines in a short period of time, so they better be conservative. if you want big power & don't require it to be idiot proof, you can save alot of money with other reputable builders than merc.

I agree they are very conservative , I would not want to build them for these idiots that run them now days and have to warranty them .they wonder why they don't last holding it say at 4900 all day with the trim down because no one told them to trim it up , just think of the strain on it
From tearing into some of the merc hp engines I am not very impressed with the way they were put together, just me I guess?

If I had a Merc 850 in my boat, who would be able to work on it?
I wouldn't trust any of the local merc mechanics on it.

Point by point..... Standard motors
Warranty........ Mercury..(Custom builders neither budget for nor manage warrantee issues properly)
Service network......... Mercury
Price versus value....... Mercury
High end HP over 1400..... STerling
High end HP under 1400..... Mercury 1075 runs with any of them...andf outlasts all of them.
Stern drives....... Duh!
Propellers......... Duh!
Tech availability and customer service...... Mercury.
Race engines........ Mercury is running even up with the higher priced spread in Super Cat
So the answer is..........
Buy a Skater.

We just got some Teague 900 EFI's. 100 hour warranty. Good engines. 20k less for each engine compared to a Merc 850 at OEM price. There is no doubt Merc makes a great engine, but the prices have gone out of control.
