Allison is the shiznit. 5 speed automatic, designed for towing and hauling. It can be programmed to automatically downshift when deccelerating to save on brakes. Very, very strong tranny. There are other benefit, but these are what I can pull off the top of my head.

Sean,
The Allison is the better transmission. It's a 5 speed. And it is more of a heavy duty trans. My buddy has an 8.1 allison extra cab non dually he gets 12 miles per gallan non towing and he pulls a 32 foot travel trailer and he gets 9 with it. He's got 3.73 gears. I know your looking used but I would get the allison if I were you. But if the price is right the heavy duty 4 speed should be OK. But with your boat I would want a 4.10 rear. Give me a shout and I'll go shopping with you. 2 heads are better than 1 when it comes to looking at used trucks. How was that 96 I told you about?

mileage

I have a 2001 GMC with the 8.1 and Allison trans crew cab 4x4 with 32" Pro comp tires. I get between 9.5mpg and 11mpg depending on how heavy my foot gets. I modified the air-intake, exhaust and computer. This truck rocks! I can pass nearly anything... except the gas station. While towing my mileage is 7.5 to 9.5 depending on hills and speed. I wish the fuel capacity was larger. My range is right at 200 miles. I believe the 2003 has a larger fuel tank. I have 40,000 miles on my GMC and I absolutely love the truck! It is my first GMC/Chevy and I will by another. The gas motor may not have the torque of the diesel but it has more HP. I like the way it will roast the 32's. The five speed Allison transmission almost seems to read your mind the way that it downshift with each tap of the brake.

If I'm not mistaken, the Allison is the only transmission other than the manual that you can get with either the 8.1 or the Duramax.
