I know the rush !!
My first two jumps were static line from 4500'. I then did the same deal that Sydwayz described. Usually got out at around 12,000. Had 10 free fall flights, was only jumping with one instructor, and he was pretty much just watching and showing me better control. Then, I started racing boats and priorities changed, (read; time & money).
I've been wanting to go back to get my freefall license, but just never got the time.
Oh, Jon,
Although they had a great record, our DZ wasn't exactly known for having "perfectly good" aircraft. Even the pilot had her own chute...

OMG!!!!!!!!!!
Can you say almost ketchup?
You guys have the stones to do that great.
Me, I want 3000 lbs of steel/glass/etc around me
or a boat I can steer.
Wild, you are lucky you did the fall w/ the instructor. If not you may have been history!
Now we know why some people will only pack their own chutes.
