Since I don't own a 31 Scarab my words are just an opinion I have gotten from the rides I've been in:
31 Scarab (warmed over 502's ,80mph)
31 Scarab ( 502's carbed,69mph)
31 Scarab (502's efi, 72mph)
31 Scarab (350's carbed 71mph)
31 Larry Smith Scarab (565's carbed, 96mph)
Well from what I see these boats are under rated. For the price you get alot of boat. The cockpits are huge and so are the cabins.
I don't know much about the Hustler other than with equal power I'm sure it's faster. As far as the rough water ride I think the Scarab will be better. As far as fit an finish , the Scarabs seem to be inconsistent. Some are great some aren't probably due to the fact that it is a production boat.
Isn't the Hustler a step bottom ? If so I'm sure the Scarab will have a nicer ride.
If all out speed and a boat that gets alot of attention at the docks go with the Hustler. If you want a semi fast boat with alot of room go with the Scarab.

I know of a 32 Hustler wiht warmed over 502's that clocked in at 88mph. Same boat with 700's here in NJ is just under 100mph.
The 32' Hustler is not stepped and is actualy a 28 foot magnum stretched to 32'. It rides much nicer than my 30 ft. Scarab.
My boat, of course older with TRS' and 550's is at 76 mph.

Mike, Your's of course.
Yeah, I picked up a few hundred RPM's, go figure. I guess my port job on the intakes payed of a little. Last year I was struggling to get to 5000 rpms with a full load of fuel. 5200 so far this year!
Maybe it is worth a mile an hour or two? Who knows?
Good to see the trailer is almost ready. So when are the motors going back in? When's the first ride!!

Don't care which boat it is, as long as one of you guys take me out.
The Hustler/Scarab thing. Hustler was a more comfortable ride out on the Ocean, especially in the rough stuff. If I had a choice of which to go out of Barnegat Inlet in, it would be the Hustler. Sorry Panther But that is not to say, I would never go out for a ride with ya. Call me, and I'll be there!!! But I will decline if it is like the day after the JC boat show .

I looked at a couple of 31 Scarabs prior to buying my 32 Hustler. It seems like build quality was inconsistent, as well as it appeared that cerain items were optional. For example (1)31 I looked at had Bennet tabs, and not k-planes. Not to slam Scarab. In general, I wasn't impressed with their wiring or rigging. But, to some people, this isn't as critical.
The 32 is not, nor ever had, a stepped bottom. It has a notched transom only.
Best thing is to look both over top to bottom, and try them both. Some people love their Scarabs. Personally, I love the ride and handling of the 32 Hustler. I even tried stepped hulls prior to the purchase, and decided to stay with the traditional deep-V.
Is the '89 Hustler 32 the black one for sale in Philly area?

test both, i had a 26 Hustler that some handling issues, chine walking above 75 mph, and porpoised at cruising speed. But it was a great boat that saw alot of water. aside from a rug coming unglued in the cabin, there was not one problem with the work that Hustler did. Came home from Block Island in 4`s and 5`s, a little bumpy but no problems. Everything that Hustler did in those days was for wide open throttle. I think it porpoised because the lifting straks came all the way back to the notch. Any questions feel free, i also know alot of people that worked there over the years.
