I don't think it will be how loud they will test you at. They will keep it simple. You either have a legal muffling device or you don't. The decibel meter, not many if any officials were trained on it.

What is the deal with this? My boat has no mufflers, and never had mufflers since the boat was manufactured in 86'. Why should I have to go out and spend $3000 for a muffler system? Isn't there some kind of grandfather clause?

New Hampshire is WOT @ 50 feet. Jersey did away with that a number of years ago , since they didn't want to be responsible if you wrecked or blew up your boat following their orders to "run it wide open".
Also the last book I read in Jersey stated "90 dbs @ idle , in neutral , measured where the gunwhale and stern meet and not less than 4' above the water.

This is all a load of crap! I'm looking forward to getting pulled over this year.

Most of the time when I see a cop, I shut one motor down so things are not as loud. Maybe the state should buy me the mufflers so that I can satisfy their specifications.

I never did have my noise level measured, I wonder if it is over 90dB's anyway.

I am still pissed about the registration increase this year. I mean double the cost from last year?? Something is wrong here!! Not that it's a lot of money anyway, but it's a matter of principle!

I just read this morning in the Asbury Press that Roger Brown said that "they will have to dust off the meters" meaning the dcb meters that were purchased previously. The article aslo stated that the Marine Police can't just pull you over, you have to be excessively noisely and give them good reason to do a test. I bet even with my thru-hulls, I'm not 90dcb at idle with the test. I could just slap some Drew Marine sliencers on with no spring tension, is that legal, I'd suppose yes by the law.

Can they just make you go out and spen 3K to put muffs on when you boat is in a stock configuration and registered in the State? Autos have certain grandfathering rules... You can't just collect fees and stuff then turn around and say you are not legal. I can name a hell of a lot more laws not being enforced on the water, and more frequently that directly impact saftey and unsafe operation. I switch to thru-prop when I idle back up to my lift. I should be stopped if I don't on run it on plane. Is this just a tit for tat tactic becasue of the "speed wars" that went on. We are impacted by what is going on up by me but we don't have really any issues like the Barnegat.
