The Aussie racer Stefan Ackerie. He was the consummate showman, always a smile, a wave and thank you to the crowd, even when the crowd was small.......
I remember taking a bird with me to watch offshore racing at Hastings (Australia) about mid eighties, filthy weather, cold, raining and blowing a gale. Stefan won comfortably (plenty of retirements) and when he pulled into the dock, he climbed up on the front deck waving a chequered flag and loudly saying "Thank you my fans, thank you all!" I looked around, and aside from my bored girlfriend, the only other people in the area were his crew and a couple of marina employees.
He was still a great racer and personality who encouraged Aussies in everything they did, especially powerboat racing.
