Sounds crazy but jewelry is always a big hit with mom. Are the girl's ears pierced? (Many girls have them pierced before they're a year old.) How about small diamond stud earrings? Or a pretty gold baby chain that she then can pass on to her daughter someday?
The other thing I kept and passed onto my daughter was a small wooden table and four small chairs that my grandfather gave me when I was about 2 years old. My friends and I spent many hours playing at that table. You can order it via the Internet and have it shipped to the girl's house.

MXZ - The "party" is in Gloucester, MA. On the same day we are offering my mother's (and her recently deceased little dog's) ashes to the sea.
MOPOWER - Now we're talking. I was actually thinking of a 2002 or 2003 bottle of vintage wine (i.e. Ch. Margaux) or champagne, to be opened on her 21st.

Ears peirced at 1 year???
I think it should be up to the child at a reasonable age to make the decision to scar her own body. Call me a kook, but I think that is a very selfish act by a parent. Almost as bad as tatoooing the child!

ScreaminEagle - Excellent suggestion - the mother LOVES jewelry - gold baby chain sounds like a winner. Any idea as to the vendor?
A gold baby chain with a baby Fountain pendant would be a kick . . .

I hadn't thought of that either - what better gift than a gift that gives forever . . . the 'lower-back tattoo' . . . actually, as a joke, a gift certificate to a tattoo parlor might be hilarious. . .
