Repowering a 33' Outlaw
I know, I know Baja's are slow tanks. However, I might be able to pick up a 1998 33' Outlaw SST with out power and was wondering what route would be the best regarding repowering it. I think having someone build me motors would be the most cost effective. Ideally would like total power to be in the 1000-1200hp range, but could get buy with 850 (2-496HO's). Really not sure where I need to be $$$ wise yet. Any suggestions regarding the best bang for the buck would be great. BTW, would prefer EFI.
Thanks

I've always thought the 33 Outlaw was a great boat. You can get some speed out of the boat with some good power and set up. I would definitely find some Mercury power . Try and find some 600 sc's / 500 efi's or even the rare Bulldog motors. Prop her right and maybe blueprint the bottom and you'll have a wave bashing , fast boat - good luck - BH

Depending on how fast you want to go and how much money I have a friend with an 01 with 500 EFI's doing about 78 - 80 mph and another with an 02 with HO's doing about 73 - 75 mph. I say go with the new 525 EFI's, they are supposed to be hott motors.

Man, I wish I was in your position. I want to throw about a conservative 700hp per side at one of these and run 90. I think that would be killer. They are awesome boats, and even the Baja bashers typically have very good things to say about the 33 and 36.
For reliabilty, I think the 525's or even the 575's would be a super neat package. If nothing else, 500efi's would be solid and reliable. Maybe look into putting some boxes on it, I have heard they like them.
Good luck, have fun, go for it.
If you pass on this, would you mind sending me some info @ [email protected]
Thanks, Allan

I have seen 82mph with 500EFI's and XR's (No Boxes)
4 people and 1/3 tank of gas. Also about 200lbs of adult beverages in a cooler for the dock. And yes I saw 82 before the adult beverages were opened!
I would go with 500EFI's and XR's. Dont do Bravo 1's. You may wish to do a HP upgrade later and will have to flip a larger bill. Do it right the first time. Later if you need more power add a Pro-Charger to the mix and that boat should scoot!
Congrates on the new boat!

another good motor out there is the 530X motor... made by GM to compete against the mercury racing motors... it is about 540-550 hp at the crank about 25-30 more than the 500 hp efi... it is cheaper and very similiar to the 500 hp efi from mercury racing..

i will tell you what i remember....
the 530 X complete i believe was aroune 18K
they also have available the new HP3 496 ... but it is around 28K.. they were real impressed with it though... said it had match ported heads and all kind of trick work done with it... said the reason they are competing with mercury is because they told them how to build the new 496 and merc didn't do it so they did..
the guys at marine power were real good to talk with.. the other thing if i remember correctly ...is a plus for me .. good friend is a good mech with scopes and all .... the X motors are GM computer not mercury computer...
